    My introduction to literacy came from my mom reading to me and the environmental print around me. At a young age I was recognizing restaurant signs and making requests.

    This was the first piece of literature that I remember changing my opinion on the classics. I went from seeing them as something we were forced to read in school to seeing the deeper meaning in this literature and it made a large impact on me.

    During my junior year of high school, an English teacher submitted a poem I wrote into a competition. It was chosen as one of the poems to be published. This furthered my love of writing poetry.

    While obtaining my bachelors I read about many different educational theories, philosophies, and ways to be a better educator. These different texts allowed me to be prepared as I was getting ready to venture out and educate young minds.

    This was the first time I was able to use all of the things I leaned from my professors and college text. I was now an educator that was building the educational foundation for young learners. As a kindergarten teacher I was charged with building the literacy base for all of my students.

    Lucy Calkin's books and the writers workshop model changed the way I shaped young writers. I saw these young minds open and become authors. They were able to write their own thoughts, at their own pace, in their own words.

    This book made a big impact on my life as I was getting ready to become a mother for the first time. Reading this helped me understand more about what I was going through and how my baby was growing and changing.

    Literacy in my life now, for the most part, is focused on helping young readers. I work to make my students fluent, life long readers. I also work each day to be a good example of a reader so that my daughter can hear how a fluent reader sounds.
