  • Chika Chika Boom Boom

    Chika Chika Boom Boom
My mom would read me Chika Chika Boom Boom every night at bedtime. She would show me the pictures as she read.
  • Trips to the Library

    Trips to the Library
I can remember going to the library with my mom and my brothers. She would bring us to the kids section and we would pull out tons of books and my mom or older brothers would read to us. At the end of our trip we would all have 2 or 3 books to checkout.
  • Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?

Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?
My mom would read Brown Bear to me at bedtime
  • The Adventures of Frog and Toad

The Adventures of Frog and Toad
My mom and I would read The Adventures of Frog and Toad together. She would help me with sounding out the words.
  • Coping with my Lisp

    Coping with my Lisp
I remember being in 1st grade and the teacher was having all the kids read out loud. Right before it would get to my turn I would ask to go to the bathroom. I had a really bad lisp and didn't want to read out loud, it was embarrassing and kids would tease me.
  • Book Fair

    Book Fair
I loved when the book fair would come to my elementary school. Each year my mom would bring me and let me and my brothers each pick out a new book. It was always hard picking just one, but I remember thinking how cool it was to have so many books to pick from to take home to be my very own.
  • Speech Therapy

    Speech Therapy
Because my lisp was so bad the school and my mom put me in speech therapy, I stayed in it until I started Junior High School
  • Coping with Reading Comprehension Problems

    Coping with Reading Comprehension Problems
My teacher and my mom had a meeting because my reading grade was so bad. They didn't understand why I couldn't explain what I had read. They had me tested and it turned out that I have reading comprehension troubles. I can read something over and over and still not be able to explain what I read. I went into a special class to help me understand better and my mom would have to read books to me so I could do my homework.
  • Time For Glasses

    Time For Glasses
Even with the help of the special education teacher I was still really struggling with my reading. Nothing made sense and I hated to read. My mom took me to the eye doctor and he said I need to wear glasses when I read. It helped me a lot, I could finally see what I was reading, but I was still having problems really understanding what I was reading.
  • Harry Potter and The Scorcerers Stone

Harry Potter and The Scorcerers Stone
I really liked reading this book, but it was hard for me because of my reading comprehension problems. When I finally watched the movie I understood the book a lot better.
  • SCOE Kids

    SCOE Kids
During my 5th and 6th grade I volunteered, on my lunches, to help the kids that were in SCOE on campus at La Tercera Elementary School. I would read to them and help them read and I wasn't embarrassed about my lisp. The kids loved the reading with me and it felt good to help them.
  • Hunger Games

    Hunger Games
I saw the movie The Hunger Games with my mom, she told me that the book was much better than the movie. My mom gave me her Hunger Games book to read. She was right it was better, it took me a long time to read it because it is such a big book, but I was glad that I did.
  • Romeo and Juliet

    Romeo and Juliet
Freshman year we had to read Romeo and Juliet. I was so confused, none of it made sense to me. I even tried having my mom read to me and still it left me utterly confused. I did not like this book
  • To Kill A Mockingbird

    To Kill A Mockingbird
Our class was assigned to read this my Freshman year. It was much easier to read than Romeo and Juliet. My mom had read the book when she was in high school so she was able to talk to me about it and help with the book. I still had problems reading and understanding what was read. My mom downloaded the movie from Amazon, after I read the book, and after I watched the movie the book seemed clearer to me.
  • Macbeth

    Macbeth
Another confusing book for me, it was like I was reading a book in a foreign language. I did not like reading this book, it made me not want to even try.
  • Audio Books

    Audio Books
My Sophomore year my Studies Skills teacher recommended that I try audio books so that I can understand the books better. It made a huge difference. My mom would download the books to my phone and I could lay in bed or go for a walk and just listen to the books.
  • Gone Girl

    Gone Girl
Finally I am able to understand books, with using the audio books it opened up a love for books. I like movies, but nothing compared to reading the book and being able to hear all the details that the movies just can't catch. I loved this book so much I couldn't wait to read the other books by the author. Finally, I wanted to read books!
  • The Outsiders

    The Outsiders
Over the summer, of my sophomore year, I read The Outsiders. My mom still had her book from when she was in high school. She had told me about it and how good it was so I decided to read it. I really liked this book and I spent the entire summer saying "stay golden pony boy"
  • Hamlet

    Hamlet
Again, Shakespeare utterly confused me. This time I listened to the audio book, but that helped nothing. I still dislike Shakespeare.
  • Into The Wild

    Into The Wild
My senior year of high school I read Into The Wild and watched the movie. I was consumed by this book. I told my mom all about it and anyone else in the house that would listen. I still think about that man and how he just walked away from everything, it really made me think about my life and what would it take for me to just up and disappear.
