    Texas Declares Independence
    Texas signed its declaration of independence at the "birthplace of Texas" which is what is refered to from Washington-on-the-Brazos. Just like the regular Declaration of Independence of the United States, texans gained their independence as citizens of Texas.

    Polk becomes president. Polk waanted to spread slavery into new territories especially Texas. The idea of western epansion became very popular in this time because new technological advancements were being created, Tension was created more the more slavery was attempted to move westward

    The Mexican- American War was created Zachary Taylor took his army and attacked "no man's land". The Americans won this war and this shows that they wanted to expand westward and throughout new territories

    The Election of 1848 was the 16th presidential election that held the winning for Zachary Taylor. In this period, popular sovereignty was created; allowing people to vote whether or not they wanted to contain slavery in ther state.

    Lincoln wins majority of the elcetoral college votes. The Importance of his election is that he showed that he was a shrewd military strategist. Lincoln was not an abolitionist, but he agreed that slavery was morally wrong. This view won many of the Northern's votes.

    The Civil War began as a war of sectonalism, but had ended with a war of slavery. Many of the slaves volunteered to participate in the war to escape for freedom in the north. As a result, the North kept many of the slaves. The confiscation Acts were created hat applied that the Union would take over the slaves and free them and the slaves would escape to the Union army.

    The Emancipation Proclamation changed the focus of the war from being keeping the Union together to focusing on slavery. Many other countries look down of slavery, so it was important that the United states was slave free.

    The South was devestated after the war and the government and the rest of the south was becoming a part of the union again.

    Robert E Lee surrender s to Grant. Lincoln is assasinated by JOhn Wilkes Booth, so Andrew Johnson continues the reconstruction plan that Lincoln had created for after the war, except Johnson had called it the "Restoration". More freedom was given to slaves and also women. Women had gained more rights to work since the white men were away at war.

    Both the North and the South favored Rutherford Hayes. He was a part of the House of Representatives, elected by Cincinnati. He was a part of congress. He also participated in saving African Americans and giving equal rights. When he was elected president, he announced that he would only be serving one term, then to retire.
