    Jan. 13- Earthquake measuring magnitude 7.9 strikes El Salvador, killing more than 840 people. Originally the quake was rated a 7.6 on the scale then revised to a 7.9.While 2,000 people were injured, 840 were killed

    Febuary 18: Death of Earnhardt
    Feb 18th Crash during Daytona 500 race on last lap claims life of Dale Earnhardt. He was famous in the NASCAR racing world, and a role model to numerous young folk. His son, Dale Earnhardt Jr. , is also a famous racer who continues his legacy.

    March 4: Largest oil find in 3 decades
    Mar 4th Tests in recent days confirm the world's largest oil find in three decades in the Kashagan field in the Caspian Sea. Of course now a days there are much larger reserves, but at the time that was a huge find. The oil find was one of the better events of 2001.

    April 1: Neatherlands first to legalize gay marriage
    Apr 1st Netherlands Legalized same sex marriage. They were the first in the world to have legalized gay marriage. Since the mid-1980´s activists have been protesting for gay marriage to be legalized and in 2001 that was a huge feat.

    May 3: US loses seat in U.N Human Rights Commision
    May 3rd The United States loses its seat on the U.N. Human Rights Commission for the first time since the commission was formed in 1947. The vote raised suspicions in how the commission was formed. It was agreed that even after being dropped from the commission, the US would continue to work towards improving human rights.

    September 11: terrorist attack on world trade center
    Sep 11th Two passenger planes hijacked by terrorists crash into New York's World Trade Towers causing the collapse of both and death of 2,752 people. While there are numerous conspiracy theories surrounding the event, over all all of America felt the impact of the event. Luckily in 2012 the leader of the terrorist group at the time was captured and killed by president Obama.

    Sep 20th In an address to a joint session of Congress and the American people, U.S. President George W. Bush declares a "war on terror." The war on terror was issued shortly following the events of 9/11. The war on terror was used as a retaliation tactic by the Americans.

    November 27: Hydrogen atmosphere discovered on extra solar planet
    Nov 27th A hydrogen atmosphere is discovered on the extrasolar planet Osiris by the Hubble Space Telescope. It is the first atmosphere detected on an extrasolar planet. This was a huge find following the previous events of the year.

    July 11: Iraq resumes oil exports after protest
    Jul 11th Iraq resumes oil exports.The exports resumed after ending a 5-week halt in protest of a US and British-sponsored UN Security Council resolution. Oil was one of the main exports the US received from Iraq.

    febuary 26: Taliban destruction in Afghanistan
    Feb 26th The Taliban destroy two giant Buddha statues in Bamyan, Afghanistan. The statues stood for 1,700 years until the leader of the Taliban at the time, Mullah Mohammed Omar, ordered their destruction due to them not being Islamic statues. That was just the start to numerous other statues in the Kabul museum being destroyed.
