Senator Brien McMahon Proposes Idea
Senator Brien McMahon proposed an idea to create an army of skilled young americans that go to other countries to provide help. The program he was proposing was based off of church missionaries which have been sending people to deveolping countries for decades. -
First Bill
Senator Hubert H. Humphrey proposed the first bill to establish a peace corps. When the bill was first introduced it didn't get much enthusiams because congressmen didn't like the idea of thousands of americans scattered all over the world. Also because there wasn't much research done on the subject, so Humphrey didn't have a lot of factual support. -
Research Stage
Congressmen Henry Ruess and Senator RichardNeuberger introduced a nongovernmental study that would allow the research of the practicality and availability of the peace corps idea. $10,000 was made available to Colorado State University to initiate the study. -
Start of Public Awareness
In 1960 Kennedy proposed the idea of creating the peace corps, so young american men and women can go to developing countries for two years and use their skills and knowledge to help the growth of countries. Also instead of getting drafted they can join the peace corps. This was said in california when JFK was visiting to win the electoral votes. -
The start of the beginning
In 1960 JFK went to the University of Michigan and challenged 5,000 kids to give two years of their lives to contribute to other developing countries. This was the planting of the seed for JFK to young people to get them on board with the idea of the peace corps. Students every loved the idea of the peace corps. -
Executive Order
President John F. Kennnedy after weeks of his inauguration signed the executive order 10924 that established the peace corps in a trial basis.
