    Proclamation of 1763
    British Rationale- In order to appease Native Americans after the french and Indian war. Forced American colonists off of natives land.
    Colonial Reaction- Resentment and failure to comply. The colonists wanted to expand west so they resented the act and kept expanding
  • Sugar Act- May 1764

    Sugar Act- May 1764
    British Rationale- the British were trying to stop the smuggling of sugar and molasses in the colonies by reducing tax but enforcing the collection of dues. Colonial Reaction- Boston experimented with boycotts. The colonists used sugar and molasses to make rum. This also made it to where the colonists could not trade with the Dutch. French and Spanish.

    British Rationale- the British wanted to take complete control of the colonial currency system. Colonial Reaction- Resentment. The colonists thought that the act was a blatant way for the British to make money off the colonists

    British Rationale- the British needed to pay soldiers in the colonies so they taxed colonists on paper & paper products in order to pay for the soldiers during the 7 years war. Colonial Reaction- Petitions, boycott, and violence. The colonists had a problem with the idea of taxation without representation.

    British Rationale- the British wanted to keep soldiers in the colonies in the only “to protect” the colonists. Colonial Reaction- Protest in assemblies. The colonists did not like how they had to pay for the barracks for the army during peacetime.

    British Rationale- since the colonists rebelde and protested the stamp act the British repealed the stamp act and then that same day they passed the declaratory act which gave the British complete legislative. Colonial Reaction- Rejoicing over repeal; ignoring declaratory act. The colonists did not care about the declaratory act because they were too busy celebrating the repeal of the Stamp act.

    British Rationale- the British wanted to pay for judges and officials in the colonies had so they made the colonists pay their salaries by taxing imports. Colonial Reaction- Boycotts, petitions, newspaper attacks. The colonists first did not like taxation without representation. They also did not like the way their taxes were being spent.

    British Rationale- the British wanted to save the East Indian tea company from bankruptcy so they lowered their tax on tea to help that company monopolize tea trade. Colonial Reaction- Protest, Boston tea party, boycott. The colonies believe that they should only be taxed by their elected representatives.

    British Rationale- The British wanted to get the colonists under control after the Boston tea party. It took away self government for the colonists. Colonial Reaction- Boycott, convening first continental congress. The colonists were unhappy that the British were coming down on the colonies which limited their freedoms.

    Battle of Lexington and Concord- April 1775
    British Rationale- the British wanted to disband the colonial militia so they marched hundreds of troops to concord and attacked the militia to steal their gunpowder. Colonial Reaction- Thomas Paine’s “common sense”. The colonists were split on if the colonies should go to war or not. Thomas Paine writes “common sense” in order to convince people to go to war.
  • Second Continental Congress- May 1775

    Second Continental Congress- May 1775
    Location- The Second Continental Congress was held in Philadelphia
    Significance- It created an organization that would help organize the war efforts.
    Result- The colonies now have people that can organize the plan of attack against the British.
    Effect- This gave the colonies a level playing field against the British because now both sides have an organized military.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill- June 1775

    Battle of Bunker Hill- June 1775
    Location- This batlle was fought in Boston
    Significance- It was significant because it showed what thr war against the British was going to be like.
    Result- Even though the colonists lost they still caused great casualties to the British.
    Effect- The colonists showed that they can fight agaisnt the British and possibly even win the war.
  • Declaration of Independence 1776

    Declaration of Independence 1776
    Location- Was signed in Philadelphia
    Significance- It helped establish an international presence of the colonies that they want independance from the British.
    Result- This also allowed for the colonists to create an alliance with the French.
    Effect- The colonists officially anounced that they wanted independance.
  • Battle of Saratoga 1777

    Battle of Saratoga 1777
    Location- It was in Saratoga which is in the New York state.
    Significance- With an American victory this was a huge turning point in the war.
    Result- The Americans achieved their first victory in the Revolutionary war.
    Effect- The Americans now have a sense of hope in the Revolutionary war that they can actually win.
  • Battle of Yorktown 1781

    Battle of Yorktown 1781
    Location- The surrender was in Yorktown.
    Significance- It marked the end of the Revolutionary war.
    Result- With an American victory and the British surrndinrng the americans win the Revolutionary war.
    Effect- The Americnas are now free from the British.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    The treaty of Paris was signed in Paris, France.
    This officially ended the Revolutionary war.
    Result- Was signed by the British and the Americans that officially ended the Revolutionary war. Made the colonies an independent country that was recognized as such by foreign countries.
    The treaty of Paris included the end of the American Revolutionary War, that the British acknowledged the independence of the United States, and that the colonial empire of Great Britain was destroyed in North America.
