The event inspired unprecedented excitement from the public and enjoyed greater media coverage than ever before. The mascot of the Paralympic Games was named Mandeville as a tribute to the original Games. The 4,000-athlete milestone was reached for the first time, with 4,237 competing, and it was also the year that events for athletes with intellectual impairments were reintroduced.
