Possible inspiration for the character of Valmont in Les Liasons Dangereuses. Was first betrothed to Josephine's younger sister, Catherine, who died at the age of twelve. Josephine came to Paris to be married in her stead.

    Michaux's expedition to America begins, with the purpose of finding plants, particularly trees, which could be useful to introduce to French soil. Timber was scarce at this time, and a larger fleet was neccessary to compete with the English navy. Michaux establishes his first garden in Bergen County, NJ, in the care of the gardener Saunier who is sent along with him from the Jardin des Plantes.

    Without permission from French government, Michaux leaves the Philadelphia area for Charleston, SC and establishes a new garden, leaving Saunier in New Jersey. In June he comes to Mount Vernon with letters of introduction and dines with George Washington.

    Louis XVI's firing of Necker prompts the impassioned speech of Camille Desmoulins at the Palais Royale, which stirs the people to capture the arms at Les Invalides on July 13th. Thus armed, they march on the Bastille at mid-morning. By 5:30pm, the fortress had fallen.

    Alexandre de Beauharnais accused an enemy of the republic and an aristocratic "suspect" for having poorly defended the city of Mainz in 1793. Held at Carmes prison in Paris until his death at Place de la Revolution in 1794.
  • Josephine imprisoned

    Josephine was imprisoned by the Committee of Public Safety at Carmes, where she joined her husband, Alexandre. The two, previously at odds, were reconciled to a platonic friendship in prison and each took a lover of their own while incarcerated. Alexandre was executed on July 23rd. Robespierre was taken on the 27th and Josephine was released the same day, 5 days after her husband's death.
