Byzantin- Canon Fursy De Bruille- The Cambrai Madonna
This is probably one of the oldest paintings styles dating back to the 1300's. Not much perspective and depth is used. They based art on sending out the message about the church and religion. They used a lot of jewel tone colors including blue, gold, and red.
This painting to me describes Jesus and his importance even as a child. His role effected much in people. The jewel tone colors attact me to the painting. -

Renaissance- Michelangelo- The Creation of Adam
Biblical creatio native was very big during this era. This painting was in a church which meant it had to represent God or his creations. Renissance art represented philosophy, literature, music, and science. The use of perspective was key and the placement of every figure represented something different.
This painting is one of the most know. I like it because of the depth in it by Michelangelo's using foreshortening. He also used chiarosure. Finally the perspective they had of life and church. -

Baroque- Christ Healing the Blind- El Greco
During this time people had no or lost most faith in God and religion. El Greco demonstrates the mercy of Christ byhealing Bartimaus' eye and curing his blindness. Bartimaus is then filled with the Holy Spirit allowing him to believe once more. During this period it was all about religious paintings. Dark colors were used and the paintings revolved around portraits of important people.
I am attracted to this painting, because it shows you how major events can change ones beliefs. -
Realism- Gustave Courbet- Young Women From Village
The concept behind realism is capturing life and reality whether it was good or bad. Major and simple events capturing the moment were painted with bright fresh colors. The focus of details were key and capturing reality of everything.
This painting shows wealthy women walking through a village. They spot a young lower class girl and hand her money. You can notice the seperation of classes in the painting by the colors used on them and the way they are dressed the subliminal message attacted me -
Romantic- Frank Dicksee- Romeo and Juliet
This painting represents start crossed lovers that prove their true love and desire to each other. Notice the affection they give off to each other and the romantic setting. The colors are very fresh and vibrante giving off a sensual vibe to the painting.
Romeo and Juliet is my favorite play of all time which explains my choice in the painting. To some the story sounds cheesy, but to me it is more than a love story. It represents lust and confusion and you can see it through their expressions. -
Impressionist- Mary Cassatt- Summertime
The start of oil painting was this era. During this movment in art capurting the moment was key. Pastel colors were used a lot brightening up the painting. In this movment artists tried to capture movment and a view or landscape. They avoided the use of dark colors and they added a twilight effect during the evening to help balance the light they were caputing.
Summer time is my favorite time of the year. The girls in the picture look very relaxed and one with nature and the movment of water. -
Surrealist- Salvador Dali- The Persistance of Memory
During this era of painting and art it was always interperating dreams and reality. Taking realistic concepts, settings, ideas, or people and changing them to a more complex meaningful painting. The messages behind them is what the artists try to show. The most art form used is abstract art.
I love how they create fictional scenarios and add hidden messages behind them. Different colors are used. The objects do not fit the setting they are placed in but when you look at the concept it all fits. -
Contemporary- Kay Crain- Girls by the Pool
A new style of art that uses perspective and depth. with different colors and blending different styles of art in one. It does not fall into a specific category because it does have influences from different eras.
I love the colors and time period in this painting. capturing the moment in a modern way. Even the girls physical apperance is different. Notice how the paintings are no longer religious or focused on the church, but rather reality and moments in life.
