    Starting the journey
I begin my perilous journey by walking into the exam room. It is the dawn of the English midterm and I have barely studied. Nevertheless, my goal is to totally ace it. This relates to Phoenix setting out on her perilous journey to reach Natchez and get medicine for her grandson, despite the daunting nature of the journey ahead of her.
  • Cataloguing

    Cataloguing
I begin to catalogue the questions on the midterm, breaking them down into recognizable and manageable sections. This relates to Phoenix cataloguing the animals in the forest.
  • Through the maze

    Through the maze
I muddle through the section of questions which I do not know the answers to. This relates to Phoenix making her way through the field of maze, or corn, which is taller than her head and most likely intimidating and confusing.
  • Crossing the swamp

    Crossing the swamp
I reach the essay section: an analysis of a poem which we have supposedly never seen before. However, this isn't totally true in my case, because the poem is by Edgar Allan Poe. The massive dorky crush I had on Poe in middle school pays off, and I get 100% on the essay. This relates to Phoenix crossing the swamp, as Phoenix's life in the South prepared her to easily cross swamp terrain.
  • Reaching the destination

    Reaching the destination
I get my grades back and find out that I did, in fact, totally ace the midterm. This relates to Phoenix reaching her goal of getting medicine for her grandson.
