- After refusing the offer German began to invade Belgium. ( The strategy that was being followed was known as the Schlieffen Plan)

- Purpose of the letter was to bring together Japan and Mexico with Germany in war vs. the United States
- Was intercepted by British agents after being passed from the German foreign minister (Arthur Zimmerman) to the German ambassador.
