German Foreign Minister Zimmermann sent the German Minister in Mexico a message with a proposal to be presented to the Mexican government. Zimmermann proposed a German-Mexican alliance with the payoff being Mexico's recovery of the territory lost in the Mexican American War. -
America Declares War on Germany
President Wilson appeared before a joint session of Congress and asked for a declaration of war against Germany in order to make the world safe for democracy. America thus joined the carnage that had been ravaging Europe since 1914.
