The Triple Alliance is Formed
-It is a military alliance between Germany, Austria–Hungary, and Italy. Lasted from 1882- start of the WWI in 1914.
- Each member promised mutual support if there was an attack by any other great powers, or for Germany and Italy, an attack by France alone. -
The Triple Entente is Formed
-Alliance between France, Britian, and Russia
- Alliance made after they had signed the Anglo-Russian Entente. -
Austria-Hungary Takes Control of Bosnia
lasted from 1908–1909, also known as the Annexation crisis.
Austria takes Bosnia, denies Russian claim for other changes to the Berlin Treaty of 1878.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand is Assassinated in Sarajevo
-He was heir to the throne of Austrian.
-Shot dead when the Archduke's royal enoutrage drove him through the city for an apperence and a serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, stepped out from the crowd and shot the Archduke and his wife Sophie.
"I seized the Archduke by the collar of his uniform, to stop his head dropping forward and asked him if he was in great pain. He answered me quite distinctly, 'It is nothing!'" -
Germany Invaded Belgium
German army invaded Belgium on it's way to France. During the Schrieffer plan Germany thought that going through Belgium was going to be easy and that Britain was going to remain neutral if Germany attacked Belgium.
"The Germans planned to knock out the forts and capture Liege inside three days." -
A German U-Boat Sinks the Lusitania
-At 1:40 p.m., the U-boat launched a torpedo. The torpedo hit the right side of the Lusitania. Almost immediately, another explosion rocked the ship.
-The Lusitania sank within 18 mintues and 1,198 died.
"The fact that more than one hundred American citizens were among those who perished made it the duty of the Government of the United States to speak of these things" -
The First Battle of the Somme Begins
By the end of the first day at battle, 20,000 British soldiers were dead and 40,000 wounded. Had the largest affect on Britsh miltiary in history. This disastrous battle stretched on for more than 4 months.
"I stood on the brink of the most terrible days of my life."- said by a soilder in the battle. -
The United States Declares War on Germany
President Wilson appeared before a joint session of Congress and asked for a declaration of war against Germany in order to "make the world safe for democracy."
Germany's renewal of unrestricted submarine warfare and the revelation of a proposed German plot to ally with Mexico against the US prompted Wilson's action.
"He said he was probably going before Congress the next day to ask a declaration of war, and he'd never been so uncertain about anything in his life as about that decision." -
The Zimmerman Note is Discovered
A telegram from the German foreign minister to the German ambassador in Mexico that was intercepted by British agents. In the telegram it propsed an alliance between Mexico and Germany and promised that if war with the US broke out, Germany would support Mexico.
"never before or since has so much turned upon the solution of a secret message."
