    Prince Henry of Portugal Creates the First Oceanography Institute

    The study of oceanography helped create new trade routes between countries. This caused Prince Henry of Portugal, or "Henry the Navigator" to create the first oceanography institute where students would learn about oceans, currents, and mapmaking. (trade)
  • The Beginning of Deep Diving and Submarines

    During the 1600s and 1700s, deep diving was invented which allowed for the beginning of ocean exploration. During this time, the first submarine was also invented for expedition. (navigation)
  • Exploration of the Pacific Ocean

    Lieutenant James Cook set out to sea to observe a transit of the planet of Venus across the Sun. During his voyage, Cook was able to explore and map out the Pacific Ocean, the biggest ocean in the world. He is also the first person to use a chronometer to determine his longitude at sea.   • U.S. Coast Survey Established

    President Thomas Jefferson establishes the U.S. Coast Survey. This organization would study the east coast of America and collect data on tides, tidal currents, sea floor characteristics, and the depth of near-shore waters. (scientific research)
  • The Challenger Expedition

    The Challenger Expedition was the first expedition that gathered data on seawater chemistry, currents, and marine life. This research was the groundwork of modern oceanography. (scientific research)
  • Magnetic Stripping Discovery

    The U.S. Navy and the Scripps Institution partnered up to use the first magnetometer. The magnetometer helps detect magnetic stripping on the sea floor on the United States West Coast. This proves that the sea floor is spreading (military)
  • Sealab 1

    Sealab 1 was developed by the Navy to study the psychological and physiological strain of living and working underwater. It was launched off of the coast of Bermuda at a depth of 192 ft. This proved that it was possible to live and work underwater for an extended period of time which is useful during naval battles (military)
  • The SEASAT Satellite

    NASA launched the SEASAT Satellite and it helped measure wind, sea-surface temperature, and ice conditions. The satellite was also able to provide images of clouds, land, and water. (scientific research)
  • The Founding of Clean Ocean Action

    Clean Ocean Action is one of many environmental non-profit groups whose primary concern is keeping our waters safe. A lot of people use water for recreational purposes, but that tends to cause a lot of ocean pollution. Clean Ocean Action was made to combat this issue. (recreation)
