South Carolina Exposition
John C. Calhoun wrote this piece in response to the tariff. He is stating that they needed to nullify the tax because he thought it was unconstitutional. -
Tariff of 1828
Started the nullification crisis, this put a tax on goods outside the West and North, making the South financially unstable and making it expensive to live there and sell goods. -
Tariff of 1832
This tariff was passed to try and make people less angry, it repealed some of the tax from the original tariff but failed to make anyone feel better about it. -
Nullification of South Carolina
This was SC's attempt to repeal the tax, stating that they had the power to declare any tax or law unconstitutional and can bypass it. -
Jackson's Statement Against Nullification
This was Jackson's response to SC, stating that they couldn't just repeal a tax sanctioned by the federal government because it was unconstitutional. -
Hayne's Counter Proclamation
Hayne's claps back at Jackson, stating that if a law that is passed by the Federal government is deemed unconstitutional by the state it can be repealed.
