    Sir Walter Raleigh sent exploreres to what he thought would be the 1st permanent English settelement. the settlers had no supplies there so they sent for some. But there was an attack by the Spanish and no one knows what happened to the settlers.

    Sir Walter raleigh sent more colonistst his time and added women to the mix. The first English child in the new world was born by the name of Virginia Dare. The governor John White was sent to England to get suppleis, but he didn't return until 3 years later to find the colony abandoned.

    NC was founded by Virginians. In 1663 Charles II granted the Carolina charter for lands south of Va. There was many differences in the north and the south, that is was just split into NC and SC.

    Culpeper's rebellion was an uprising against proprietary rule. It was in the Albermarle section of NC. It started when the government wanted to enforce the Navigation Acts, which denied the colonists a free market.

    NC became a royal colony when 7 of the 8 Lords Proprietor agreeded to sell their shares to King George II. After NC became a royal colony the government became stronger, and much more people started moving into the colony.

    William Hopper led a meeting to discuss the situation with Great Britain. Thirty counties held elections and the congress voiced their oppinions about britain and decided to end their trade with them.

    A group of women formed an alliance, supporting the cause of "taxation without representation". They boycotted against a tax being put on tea. so they refused to drink it.

    The Mecklenburg resolve was a list of statements saying that the laws from British Parliament are no longer in use. and the Continental Congress was the only government over the American colonies.

    It was passed by the Fourth Provincial Congress. They were the instructions by any colony that authorized its delegates to the Continental Congress. They voted for indepence from Great Britain.

    It was a battle during the American Revolutionary war against the British and Americans. The British won because they had a massive army comparing to the Americans.
  • Hillsborough Convention

    Hillsborough Convention
    At the convention delegates met to determine if there should a ratifaction of the new federal Constitution. The convention lasted until August 4 and they decided not to ratify it or reject it. The major problem was that a majority of the anti-federalist still didn't want a strong government that limited there powers, so NC remained out of the union until the Fayetville Convention.

    NC has had 2 previous constitutions. One in 1776 and 1835. The reason for the new constitution was that since the previous one, lots of new amendments have ben ratified by the state's voters. Also because the constitution was outdated. Some of the older amendments were irrelevant to the new time period.

    In this case some of the rural counties sued the state for more money for education. They felt that their kids weren't getting equal education as the more wealthier families. They argued that in the constitution it requires NC to provide schools in the state with resources to fully educate the disadvantaged students. The rulin was that the state won.

    In this case it stated that children with special needs should recieve services. hoke county argued that at-risk kids needed good education. The state said that they were already getting good education. At the final court order the supreme court agreed with hoke that the students should should have qualified well- educated teachers. So Hoke won the case.
