2004 District Tech Plan focuses on 21st Century Learning
In March of 2004, the board-approved NKCS District Technology Plan calls for efforts to "increase learning opportunities for students" by exploring learning "outside of school walls." -
Online Learning Opportunities Implemented
Online courses and blended classrooms of both online learning and face-to-face instruction were first implemented district wide during the 2005-2006 school year via Blackboard. -
Wireless Installed at High Schools
Wireless networking was installed in all existing high schools throughout the summer of 2006. -
2007 District Tech Plan Outlines 1:1 Plans
In March of 2007, the board-approved NKCS District Technology Plan focuses on mobility in learning and the desire to find an affordable enough device to provide "student laptops." -
Technology Coordinators Attend 1:1 Conference
In May of 2007, NKCS Technology Coordinators attended a conference devoted to 1:1 learning. As a result, a proposal to deploy teacher laptops two years prior to student laptops is made and subsequently approved by the school board. -
Wireless and Network Infrastructure Upgraded
Upgrades were made to the wireless network and network infrastructure through the summer of 2007 in preparation for deployment of teacher laptops and mobile laptop labs districtwide. -
Teacher Laptops Deployed to all NKCS Teachers
In July of 2007, all NKCS teachers, K-12, completed laptop orientation training and are issued laptops for the 2007-2008 school year. -
Mobile Laptop Labs Deployed to all High Schools
Carts of laptops were deployed to all three existing NKCS high schools for the 2007-2008 school year to allow teachers and students to start getting accostumed to the 1:1 classroom environment. -
Classroom Audio/Video Systems Installed at High Schools
Over the summer of 2008, all high school classrooms were updated with widescreen LCD projectors, audio amplification, and digital video player/recorder capabilities. -
Partnership with HP Established
In the spring of 2009, the Hewlett Packard company proposed a partnership with North Kansas City Schools that included amongst other services, the affordable leasing of 5600 "MiniNote" laptops to the district for student use at the four high schools. -
Wireless Network Upgraded at High Schools
Through the summer of 2009, wireless and networking infrastructure is upgraded at all NKCS high schools in preparation for student laptop deployment. -
Student/Parent Laptop Orientations Conducted
From August to October of 2009, all high school students and parents are provided student laptop orientation sessions to help prepare them for the deployment of student laptops. -
70+ Teachers become Pilot Group for Teacher Training
For the 2009-2010 school year, 70+ NKCS high school teachers volunteered for R3+ ("Rethink, Redesign, Restructure"), a staff development program designed to train teachers to better integrate 21st Century Learning strategies into their classrooms. -
Student Laptops Deployed to High School Students
Through October and November of 2009, MiniNote laptops were deployed to all NKCS high school students. -
70+ Additional Teachers Volunteer for Training

Student laptops were deployed for the 2010-2011 school year for the second year of the 1:1 initiative. -

The 2011-2012 school year marks the third year of NKCS's student laptop intiative.
