Dr. John Eaton and Dr. Victor Clark established that Puerto Rican teachers that learn English would have preference to be hired. -
1900-1902
The educational policy proposed that they would stay with the Spanish language and English would be taught as a special course. -
1902-1904
The idea of making English the official language in Puerto Rico increased its use in schools. -
1904
Puerto Rican teachers were sent to United States to study in Harvard and Cornell University during summer. -
1905-1913
The English language was used as the teaching tool in all grades of the School System. Spanish was not given. -
1913
Spanish language was used in First grade in courses such as Hygiene, Health, and Reading. -
1915
A proposal was presented to make mandatory the use of Spanish as the teaching tool. -
1916- 1934
Spanish was established for teaching in grades first through fourth and English was used in half of the subjects in the fifth to twelfth grade and the other half was in Spanish. -
1921-1930
Commissioner of Education, Juan B. Huyke made mandatory the use of English inside and outside the classroom for both students and teachers. -
1930
Dr. José Padín, the new Education Commissioner established the use of Spanish as a tool for instruction and English would be given as a foreign language. -
1936
The Bilingual Program, Commissioner Jose M. Gallardo established was unsuccessful. -
1942
Spanish was taught until sixth grade and English was taught as an additional class. -
1948
Spanish was used as a tool for instruction until ninth grade. -
1949-1950
Dr. Mariano Villarongo, Commissioner made the use of Spanish in all school levels and English as a course. -
1970
Puerto Rico qualified for the Bilingual Education Program Funds to help students who return from the United States. -
1972-1976
Bilingual Projects Padre Rufo and Papa Juan XXIII took place in Puerto Rico under the Democratic Popular Party. A bilingual certification law was sign during these years. -
1978
The USA Congress authorized that Bilingual Education projects were focus on teaching Spanish to returning students. -
1984
The Bilingual Education Program and all its projects were transferred to the English Department. -
1991
Rafael Hernández Colón declared Spanish as the island official language. -
1993
The Bilingual Education Projects became autonomous. -
1997- 1998
Pedro Rosello established an act where both English and Spanish are the official languages in Puerto Rico. -
2012
New Bilingual Projects are established in Puerto Rico for Elementary Schools the project is known as BEC 21 and ES 21 for Middle and High Schools.
