The Ghettos
pg. 11- The Jews of Sighet were being restrainted and the two ghettos formed. The ghettos kept Elie in his house, and they could not stay out after six p.m. He was very curious of what would happen to them, and this affected everyone in Sighet. -
Bye Sighet
Pg. 22- Elie's famliy left Sighet on a train heading to Auschwitz. This was the last time his mother, sister, and father saw their home. This was important, because things seemed bad, but it was about to get much worst for them. -
Crazy woman
Pg. 24- Ms. Schachter, a woman who lost all of her family except her son, went mad and started yelling, "Fire! I see a fire!" Everyone was stuck in a train cart with her, and this annoyed everyone. They beat her to try to keep her quiet. Elie's immagination messed with him and he knew that she was crazy, but he thought about if she was right. She eventually was right. -
Man in black
pg. 30- A man came up to Elie and his father trying to convince them to lie about there age. The man told Elie to say he was eighteen, and his father that he was forty. This could have saved both of them from facing a firey death in the chimney by making them seem more capable of working. -
Birkenau
Pg. 28- Elie and his family arrived in Birkenau, a concentraton camp in Auschwitz, and his mother and sister were about to die. The camp's first impression told Elie that it was going to be very rough. He still remembers his first night in the camp. -
Reality
Pg. 34- After the first night in Birkenua, Elie understood how his life was going to be from that point foward. There was nothing to live for. There was death all around him and there was no escaping it. -
Boom Headshot
Pg. 39- Elie's father was hit by a gypsy. It doesn't seem like a big deal, but this was the first time that Elie saw his father get hit. It messed with his head, and scared him. His father wasn't invincible like you think your father is. -
Stien
Pg. 44- One of Elie's relatives, Stien, came up to them and asked if they knew anything about his kids and wife. Elie lied and said that he had recieved a letter from them and that they were all right. This was a major relief to him, but Elie gave him false hope because he knew they were dead. Stien went to see the passangers from where his family should be, and learned the truth about them. Elie never saw him again. -
Buna
Pg. 46- Elie and his father left Birkenua to go to Buna, another concentraton camp. Buna was a tiny bit better than Birkenua, which was very important for Elie's survival and "well being." -
Kammando
Pg. 50- Elie and his father where put into the same kammando, job, which was good, beause the work was not very hard. The character Idek was introduced, because he was the head of the building. He was very hot-headed and they needed to not get in his way. Elie's survival evolved around his job and the people around him. -
Deja vu
Pg. 53- Elie often worked next to a French woman in his kammando. Many years later he met her and talked about what happen. This was very weird that they met, and very interesting. Also, in the book she gave him some advice to keep out of harm's way. -
Do the Whip
Pg. 57- Elie stummbled upon Idek having an affair with a woman. He laughed at the sight, and Idek caught him. Idek then whipped him senseless and almost to death. Elie finally learned what Idek was fully capable of. -
The Gallows
Pg. 61- Gallows, a post used for hanging, was set up in the center of the camp. All the prisoners were forced to watch people being hanged and look at them close up one by one. This frightened Elie, and warned him that life in the camp will change. -
Yom Kippur
Pg. 69- Yom Kippur is a Jewish holiday where Jews are supposed to fast. This event occured in the book, and Elie couldn't take the risk of fasting because he was so fatigued. Many people thought that there god was testing them. He felt very sad that he didn't, but he couldn't. -
Run Elie, Run!
Pg. 72- There was a selection for people who were too weak to work, and all of the prisoners were forced to go through. All of the people that were choosen were killed. Elie got advice from other people, and he ended up running straight through the line of doctors. He was very scared for his father because he was so weak. Thankfully, niether of them got selected. -
Elie's Heel
Pg. 79- Elie had a problem with his heel, it was filled with puss, and he was sent to the doctor. During his stay at the nursery he was well fed and treated well. He had to rest for two weeks, but he didn't have enough time. They were about to leave because the Soviets were about to take over the camp. Elie was in no condition to leave, but he did anyway. -
Wow, That Stinks
Pg. 83- Elie had the choice of staying in the nursery or staying with his father and leave. The right choice was to stay in the camp, because the Soviets ended up freeing all of them and they didn't die. Elie's foot was still healing when he went on the journey, which was an extreme disadvantage. They were sent on a long hike to another camp. -
The Trail of Blood
Pg. 86- Everything was pointless, Elie was running on zero fuel. The person that was running right next to him had just given up and died, and all he could do was run. There was no point to life other than thought of what his father would do if he died. He could not give up, that would be the worst thing to do. -
Dog Pile!
Pg. 94- When everyone got there, they all tried to get in the barracks at once. Elie and his father wer thrown around and shoved. Elie ended up on the ground on top of Juliek. They were being trampled and smothered underneath corpses, but Elie somehow escaped. Juliek played one last song before he died there in the snow. Elie and his father survived the long trek, and were at a train depot. -
El es Tan Muerto Como Hell
Pg. 112- There was offically no meaning to life for Elie because his dad was dead. He could no longer think, nothing mattered anymore. Many months passed with no purpose to them. Elie had somehow survived hell and escaped it.
