Berlin Airlift Begins
After WW2 Germany was divided into four parts and so was berlin. The Soviets wanted it for themselves so they closed all transportation services to berlin. Ultimately starving his people so they could black mail the other nations into backing out and giving berlin to the soviets. Instead The U.S participated in the berlin airlift which supplied berlin with food and supplies. -
Korean War
Communist North Korean attacked democratic South Korea. The U.S backed south korea and sent troops over to fight the russian backed north koreans. It was the first military engaged action of the Cold War. -
Warsaw Pact is formed
The Soviet Union and other european followers sign a defense organization that is to protect all nations inside treaty. If one were attacked they would all help a unified military command under Marshal Ivan S. Konev of the Soviet Union. -
Sputnik is launched
In the "space race" the U.S was battling the Soviet Union for technoligical superiority by getting to the moon first. The Soviet Union launched sputnik and succesfully landed it and was the first aircraft to reach the moon. -
U-2 Incident
The U.S sent over a spy plane over the USSR and they shot it down. After it was shot down the pilot was captured and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was released after two years in a trade for a Soviet spy. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
1400 U.S trained Cuban soldiers attacked Fidel Castro's troops. They were badly out numbered and surrendured in less than 24 hours. -
Berlin Wall built
Communist East-Germany built a wall that stopped people from fleeing to East Germany. It stood for 28 years dividing Europe. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
The Soviets had stationed nuclear bombs in Cuba and the U.S had a military and political standoff with them for fourteen days. The Soviets removed there bombs but it was a huge scare to the U.S public when thinking about nuclear war. -
Nuclear Test Ban Treaty
This treaty included: Great Britain, the U.S, and the Soviet Union. It prohibited the testing of nuclear weapons in outer space, underwater or in the atmosphere.
