San Gabriel is Established
Some time in 1600, San Gabriel was established. It was the Second capital of New Mexico. It is founded at the intersection of the Rio Grande and the Chama River. -
Gov. Luis de Rosas assassinated
On Jan. 25th 1641, Gov. Luis de Rosas was assassinated. Some colonists decided to kill him during a conflict between the church and state. Rosas had a violent past as governor. -
French Trappers
Sometime in 1743 french trappers started trading from the mexicans. This helped commerce in New Mexico before the Santa Fe Trail. To the left is a picture of what average traders look like. -
Mexico Declares Independance From Spain
On August 25 1821, Mexico declared its independance and marked the end to the Mexican War of Independence. This was important to New MExico because if Mexico never broke off from Spain, then there never would have been a Mexican- American war. Every event in the past directly effects the future. -
First major gold discovery in western U. S. made in Ortiz Mountains south of Santa Fe
In this event the spanish used indians for slave labor. The Ortiz Mountains was the first mountain in the western United States to bear gold. This was an important discovery in early New Mexico history. -
Texas soldiers invade New Mexico
Sometime in 1841, Texas soldiers invade New Mexico and claim all land east of the Rio Grande. The expedition was lead by Gov. Manuel Armijo. The texans did this because they wanted to gain control over the Santa Fe trail and control the trade. -
Mexican-American War Begins
The Mexican-American war was the first major intervention made by the United States. The war started in because Mexico was claiming that southern parts of texas were really theirs rather than the United State's. In the end of the war Stephen Watts Kearny annexed New Mexico to the United States. -
New Mexico Becomes a US Territory
On December 29th 1850, New Mexico was admitted as a US territory. After the Mexican-American War of 1846, Mexico gave the US what is now New Mexico. New Mexico was on a slow climb toward the awaited statehood. -
The Gadsden Purchase from Mexico adds 45,000 square miles to NM territory
On April 25th 1854, The Gadsden Purchase was acquired by the USA from Mexico. This added what is now southern arizona and parts on New Mexico. This brought it to its maximum size it would ever be. -
New Mexico is divided in half and created the territory of Aizona.
After the New Mexico expansion from the Gadsden Purchase, there were proposals of dividing the territory in to two. The proposal originated in Santa Fe in a meeting, but was later discussed in congress, The bill was presented in the house but was shutdown because the territory was still to small. Later on the bill was adopted. -
The Long Walk to Bosque Redondo
In August of 1863 more than 8,000 Navajo Indians were forced to leave there homes and walk 500 miles to eastern New Mexico. The place they walked to was called the Bosque Redondo, a barren strech of land near the Pecos River Valley. This was one of New Mexico's unwise decisions that may have set back their statehood and made the indians very unhappy with New Mexico -
Treaty of Bosque Redondo
On June 1st 1868, the treaty of Bosque Redondo was signed. This treaty made it so that the idians were allowed 3.5 million acres of indian reservation land. This was a peaceful conclusion to the long walk and in returen the indians promised to not declare wars on New Mexico. -
Billy The Kid Kills His First Victim
William H. Bonney, aka Billy the Kid kills his first man with a knife in Silver City at the age of 12 years old. He had stabbed an Arizona blacksmith with a knife and he died later the next day. This was the first of many kills made by the famous Billy The Kid. -

On July 14th 1881, Sheriff Pat Garrett set out with two other deputies to find and kill Billy the kid. There are two versions of what people say happened when Billy the kid was killed. One was he walked into a sallon and was shot twice by Sheriff Pat Garrett, the other is that he was stabbed to death. -
Transcontinetal Railroad Was Established in New Mexico
The Transcontinetal Railroad passed through most of the states in the 1880's. Durring this time it went through other states which included; New Mexico, California and Kansas. Altough there were many more, those are just a few of the major one that it passed through. -
Geronimo Surrenders
There is no exact date when this happened but Geronimo surrendered in 1886. Geronimo was a primary leader of the Bedonkohe Apache who fought against Mexico. He surrended to the US as a Prisoner of War and died of old age. -
First movie filmed in New Mexico, Indian Day School by Thomas Edison

This was one of the first ever movies filmed and it was filmed by Thomas Edison. It was an innovation for technology and advertisment for New Mexico. The film was just several little Indian children running in and out of a school house. -
The Spanish-American War
1898-1901 The Spanish American War was a conflict between Spain and the United States which started because American Affiars in Cube resulted in the Cuban War of Indepandence. America had launched a few attacks on nerby cuban forces resulting in The Spanish-American War. -
People of New Mexico and Arizona vote on issue of joint statehood, New Mexico voting in favor and Arizona against.
There is no specific date this occured but New Mexico wanted to do a joint statehood with arizona to increase its republican control in the senete. Most New Mexicans favored the idea while most citizens in arizona rejected the idea. They rejected this because they were fine on there own and didn't need to help New Mexico become a state aswell. -
New Mexico Constitution Adopted
In the constutional convention on November 21st 1910, the committee finally came to a conclusion on the constitution. A year later it was ratified by a vote of people. Another year later New Mexico was admitted as the 47th state in the United States. -
New Mexico Becomes a State
New Mexico was the 47th state added to the union on January 6th 1912. This event is important because if this had not have happened, New Mexico would not be a state. This was just another chapter in New Mexico's history.
