    The compromise of 1850 made California a free state, Slaves were banned in D.C., and The fugitive slave act was passed. This made the balance of slave and free states get out of balance and upset some slave owners. But the fugitive slave act made them happy because it was by law that if a slave excaped then if someone in the north saw them them they had to return the slave.

    The Kansas Nebraska Act opened the lands of Kansas ansd Nebraska for settlement and let them determine slavery through popular soverteignty. This was the first time that the idea of Popular Soverteignty was put into use and it was a form of test run with this new idea.

    The Emancipation Proclomation freed all of the slaves and was a main reason for the continuation of the civil war. This is remembered in history because all of the former slaves were freed and so they could fight for the Union and help win the war!

    The 54th was one of the first all black infantry units on the Union's side of the war. It was a huge turning point because now slaves were fighting against their former masters. This made all of the slaves have something to fight for so they fought harder and for a better cause.

    It starved the city of Vickburg and made them surrender. The union won this battle and at the same time they were winning at Gettysburg. This really demoralized the Confd. because they got cornered and they got imbarassed.
