Netflix was created by Reed Hastings and cofounder Marc Randolph as a way to bring movies to the internet instead of just going to the movies. according to Randolph he was sick of paying late fees for movie rentals, " he was not alone" I myself remember paying more in late fees than for the movie rental it's self. -

netflix.com was started to offer us a choice of renting DVD's or purchase the movie. Instead of paying late fees Netflix came up with the concept that no matter when you paid for the movie you had 24 hours to watch. This was a big thing because nobody was offering us not only the rental without late fees, but if you really liked the movie, you could just download it and keep it for yourself, versus continued rentals. -
subscription services
Netflix started offering subscription services that according to how much you could afford monthly you can stream as many movies as possible. I myself only pay 9.99 / month, but the services use to offer subscriptions starting at 5.99. Netflix added movies onto your streaming subscription depending on the movies you liked and / or watched. -
Netflix starts Streaming
Netflix stared offering streaming services. This was a big deal because with almost everyone working and being busy most of us would miss out on our favorite show because it only came on at a certain time, well with Netflix you could watch you show whenever you found the time to watch it versus missing the show or trying to rush home. -
partnering
Netflix made a smart move in 2009. They started partnering with smart TV's like LG, Samsung ect to offer streaming services. They even started partnering with gaming console companies such as XBOX, PLATSTATION. What this means is that people had the choice of having services all in one. -
Original shows
Netflix creates its own shows, such as Orange is the new Black, House of Cards and the list goes on. These shows were so great that they were nominated and won for best categories such as best drama, best supporting actor / actress the list goes on. -
Worldwide
Netflix is now around the world, in everyone's living room, gaming console, and phone. Netflix is making more of their own shows (original content) and is being watched more than the regular local stations. People say that Netflix was like watching HBO, just because it offered a more serious content and dug deeper into issues like teen suicide, nudity, and of course the content is more graphic. -
Current Competition
Today people have more sites to choose from such as Disney, Apple, Hulu, and of course Amazon now has a streaming service and offer monthly subscriptions, and the list goes on. What I appreciate about Netflix is it still is sticking to low cost, and good streaming services, from what I see all other services are just copying from Netflix.
