    The Ottoman Turks allied with Germany during World War 1 and were in control of Arabia. So Britain sought to undermine Ottoman rule in Arabia by supporting Arabian nationilasts there. In 1916, the local governor of Makkah, encouraged by Great Britain, declared Arabia independent from Ottoman rule. After suffering more than 300,000 deaths during the war, the Ottoman Empire made peace with the allies.
