Nat Turner

  • Birth Date

    Nat was born in Southhampton, Virginia
  • Nat ran away from his overseer and escaped slavery

    Nat was able to escape and he hid in the woods near his plantation, soon he wold return. The exact date in 1821 is unknown.
  • Nat returned to slavery

    Because of visions from God telling him to return to slavery to get revenge on white people, Nat returned to his plantation just one month after escaping. The exact date in 1821 is unknown.
  • Led Rebellion starting with seven other slaves.

    Believing that God requested him to do so, Nat and his followers went to different plantations, killing the slave owners and their families. As they went, other slaves joined in on the rebellion.
  • Nat and the other participants were caught by the Virginia State Militia at Belmont Plantation

    By the time they were captured or killed, seventy slaves had joined in the rebellion and they had killed about sixty white people and their families.
  • In custody, Nat confessed to leading the rebellion and killing slave owners, women, and children.

    While awaiting his trail, Nat talked and answered questions to a lawyer named Thomas R. Gray where he explained his justification for his actions.

    Nat was executed in Jerusalem, Virginia after his trial. Other slaves were also executed for participating in the rebellion.
