Napolean is Born
Napolean is born in his family home on the Island of Corsican. -
Napoleon Enters Military School
At the age of ten Napolean is enrolled into military school at the Brienne-Le-Chateau. Napolean being of higher class was very priveleged in his education compared to the average corsican child. -
Storming of the Bastille
On this day French citizens of Paris stormed the Bastille prison which stood in the center of the city that symbolized the presence of the monarchy. The prison only held about seven political prisoners at the time of its siege, but it provided the citizens with weaponry they required and sent a message to the monarchy. -
Becomes Brigadier General
After his success and demonstration of military prowess at the Siege of Toulan, Napoleon was promoted to Bridadier general. He was 24 years old at the time of his promotion and was placed in charge of the artillery of France's Army of Italy. -
Becomes Commander in Chief
At the age of 26 years old Napoleon is promoted to commander in chief of the French Army in Italy, Like with his promotion to Brigadier general this was due to his outstanding political and military perfomrance. Especially on October 5, 1795. -
Coup d'etat
During this coup, Nepoleon's brother convinced the French directory that a coup was about to take place and convinced them to relocate to Chateau De Saint-Cloud. During this time three of the head deputies resigned. Also Napoleon who antagonized the French Directory in way, caused an uproar and then manipulated the situation to make the French Directory appear hostile. Asa result, many of them were killed by gaurds and the Directory essentially fell apart. -
Concordat is Signed
This was an agreement between Napoleon and Pope Pius VII that pretty much aimed to restablish a positive view of the Catholic Church, especially among the revolutionaries, and it also recognized the Catholic Church as being the predominant church of France. -
Sale of Louisiana to the United States
This was a deal between the United States and Napoleon in which the Louisiana territory in North America was sold to the United States. Napoleon did this to gain money for projects he had planned in Europe, and to strengthen the United States which would weaken the British proportional power. -
Vote for Consulship for Life
After the fall of the French Directory, a new system of government had to be proposed. The system that ultimately won out was the Consulate system. This system had three consulates, with the first being the most powerful. By a vote of the people Napoleon became first Consulate of France. -
Proclaimed Emperor Napoleon I
During his time as first consul Napoleon grew and grew in popularity among the French people and grew in political power. As a result the French Senate would come to pass a bill on May 18,1804 in which France was named an Empire with Napoleon as Emperor. -
Contintental Blockade
In an attempt to weaken the British Economy Napoleon made a decree, barring all countries within his control from trading with Britain. However, this backfired on him as the British retaliated with their own blockade and since the British had the better navy, the French ended up suffering economically instead. -
Napoleon's Son Born
After his remarriage to Marie Louise of Austria, Napoleon had a son, Napoleon the II, who was intended to suceed him as emporer. For a brief period Napoleon the II was named the King of Rome during infancy. -
Napoleon is Exiled to Elba
After losing in the War of the Sixth Coalition, Napoleon, being viewed as the sole obstacle of peace in Europe, surrendered his title as Emperor and was exiled to the island of Elba as punishment. -
Napoleon Escapes from Elba
On February 26, 1815 Napoleon escaped from the Island of Elba to which he was exiled and restablished himself as emperor in for what would become known as his hundred days rule. -
Battle of Waterloo
Napoleon attempted to cut off the British and Prussian armies in the United Kingdom of The Netherlands during his brief return to power. However, the British were able to fend off the French attakcs while the Prussian Army arrived and pushed through Napoleon's forces. This loss for Napoleon became known as the battle of Waterloo. -
Arrives at Saint Helena
After it was declared that the Prussian Army was going to capture him dead or alive, Napoleon demanded protection from the british. As a result he was kept prisoner on the island of Saint Helena in the Atlantic Ocean. He was later moved to the Longwood House on said Island, which had terrible living conditions. -
Date of Death
On May 5, 1821 Napoleon died on the Island of Saint Helena at the age of 51. It was the conclusion of Napoleon's physician at the time that he had died due to the harsh conditions he experienced in Longwood, however modern physiciains have found evidence that he died of a peptic ulcer and gastric cancer.
