In 1981 Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer invented the scanning tunneling miscroscope. This microscope allowed scientists to see and manipulate individual atoms!

Eric Drexler published his book "Engines of Creation: The Coming Era of Nanotechnology" in 1986. The term "Nanotechnology" was established in his book.

Scientists Don Eigler and Erhard Schweizer at IBM's Almaden Research Center, San Jose, Calif, spelled out the company's logo using 35 xenon atoms. By doing so, they further demonstrated how nanoparticles can be manipulated.

The Interagency Working Group on Nanotechnology was formed in 1998 by the White House's National Science and Technology Council. Its mission was to sponsor workshops and studies to define nanoscale science and technology.
