My Technology Timeline

Dial Up Internet

1998

We had Dial Up internet for all of my childhood. I remember it being slow and having to wait for my mom to get off the phone so that I could get on. I remember the wonderful noises it made while loading. We used AOL for everything at that time as well.

Portable CD Player

2001

When I was 8 I got a portable CD Player. I loved having that and being able to listen to my own music in the car instead of my parents music.

VCR/DVD Player

2003

For my 10th birthday I was given a small box tv and a VCR/DVD player. I had it in my bedroom where I could watch any of my old disney movies that I had on VHS but I could also watch my new movies that were DVD. I was so excited that I would be able to watch all of my movies from the same device.

Ipod

2006

For Christmas when I was 13, I received an Ipod. I was so excited as they had been out for a while and I wanted to be able to listen to all of my music without carrying all of my CD's around. It was so neat that I could take all of my CDs and download them onto itunes and put them all onto this small device.

Flip Phone

2007

My freshmen year of high school I got my first job and bought my first cell phone. It was a flip phone. I had a limited amount of text messages and talking time and had to make sure I did not go over. I remember being so fast at texting but still having to push the buttons multiple times to get the letters I wanted.

Nook

2009

For Christmas when I was 15, before Kindles were big, I got a Nook. They are exactly like a kindle but made by Barnes and Noble. It had just come out the month before and the reading screen wasn't a touch screen so it didn't have a glare and was very easy to read. The bottom portion had a small touch screen where your scrolling and options would appear. You could get online and search some things but it was slow and difficult.

iPhone

2011

I got my first iPhone the summer after my first year of college in 2011. I had a Samsung phone before that was partial smartphone but did not have all of the things that an iPhone had. I was once again excited to have a device that all of my friends were using.

Wireless Internet

2012

After I came home from my first year of college, I convinced my parents to get wireless internet in our home. This was a big celebration for me as it was almost impossible to do homework assignments, get on social media, etc with dial up still. My parents are in a very rural area so the internet is even slower than normal.

Alexa

2017

For Christmas this year I got an Alexa. This has been very new technology for me and fun to experiment with. I love that I can ask it random questions throughout my house. I can also order things online, check the weather, etc.

iPad

2018

This spring I bought my first iPad. I have waited so long to get one as I didn't find a real need for it. I know love to use it at school, at home to watch shows anywhere. I love to read books on it, and use it as my portable computer besides my laptop when traveling.
