  • Black and White

    Black and White
Television was black and white and the broadcast ended after the evening news - you could turn it on and stare at a blank signal and static - we called this 'the ant races'
It was on one such television, from underneath a blanket draped over a card table that I watch Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.

    1st day of school
Mapleton Elementary - Rea Bleggi was the secretary. She knew your phone number and your mom's name, all of your siblings and probably a grandparent or two. She had the information in a card file but she never had to look it up.

You were required to bring one of these with you.
  • What is that?

    What is that?
In my grandmother's house this was a buffet. She kept her linens and china in it which we could use at Thanksgiving to set the table. In our house this was the radio and record player - it was called a 'consol'
  • When I was young

    When I was young
This was the phone of my youth only ours was a nice avocado green which matched the carpet (1960's most popular color as long as it had some purple fringe with it)
We had a 'party line' which was cheaper - it meant that sometimes you picked up the phone to call your friend and someone was on the line. You had to wait for them to finish before you could make the call.
  • Music in the Car

    Music in the Car
I grew up with AM radio which was sketchy at best. I don't remember when FM came into being. Mostly we could listen to tapes - 8 track - track that is - you had to hold onto the one you wanted to listen to (while another was playing) since there wasn't a place to store them in the car.
  • Vinyl

    Vinyl
The best sound still comes from vinyl records. I was in Jr. high when I got my own record player - I listened to STYX and JOURNEY in my own room - WOW!
  • Cordless

    Cordless
My friend's granddaughter was at her home for a large family gathering when the phone rang and no one could find where the phone was to answer it. Her granddaughter said "Why don't they attach it to the wall so they can always find it?"

    2009
This was a pain to carry around and seriously no one ever called me - I used this in emergency's only - I wasn't working at the time and really enjoyed my anonymity. Mine was actually pink!

    2011
I thought it was soooo cool to have a Blackberry because I was texting
  • 2013

    2013
My first 'smart phone' - which I still used as a phone. I never searched the web or had any games on it - (my sons phone is primarily a gaming device - I can't reach him unless I'm playing in the same game which is NEVER)

    2015
I didn't want to switch from my Samsung - I liked its operating system and felt intimidated by the iPhone that my husband had
