My Special Education Journey

  • Jonathan Ortega

I grew up with my 23-year-old cousin who has a disability; he's autistic. Since he is older than me, I grew up around him all of my life.
  • 5th Grade Teacher

My 5th Grade Teacher was the one that inspired me to become an Elementary School Teacher.
  • Night To Remember Dance

I was my cousin's "host" (date) to the Night To Remember Dance for 4 years. This dance was hosted by a local church and had volunteers that played the roles of paparazzis, limo drivers, hair and makeup artists, dressers, and so much more.
  • Bark Buddies

In high school, there was a period between period 3 & 4 named "Bark" and during that time, I was a Bark Buddy. This meant I took this time to work with the Special Education classes. We would do activities, homework, cook, play games, and much more.
  • Dorthy Boswell School

I volunteered at Dorthy Boswell Post Secondary School where my cousin attended. I shadowed him several times and experience the activities that him and his classmates would participate in.
