Independence
The proclomation said colonists couldn't move west of the imaginary line across the Appalacian mountains. -
Revolutionary War
The people formed an army with George Washington as the leader. They defeated the British. They moved to Pennsylvania. They had no food. -
War of 1812
The Capital was burned down by the British. Britain invaded, but we won. Dolley Madison saved the George Washington portrait. This war made us keep the U.S. together. -
Native Americans Move West
The government was forcing Native Americans to reservations. The Native Americans went from Oregon to Montana. -
Civil War
Robert E. Lee led the Confederate states, and Ulysses S. Grant led the Union states. They fought on land and sea. The Union states won. -
Transcontinental Railroad
Now people could travel from the east to the west in just one week instead of six months. It changed the way people and goods moved across the country. -
World War 1
America tried to stay out of World War 1. Europe sank our ships. -
The Great Depression
Banks and buisinesses failed, people lost their jobs. Congress created programs to make the economy stronger. One of the programs is the Civilian Conservation Corps wich helps care for the environment. -
World War 2
Japanese bombed pearl harbor. Germans sent Jewish people out of Germany. 2 atomic bombs ended the war. The bombs were set on Japan. -
Technology Takes Off
4 million families bought the TV in 1950. 10 years later 50 million people had TVs. In 1969 Americans walked on the moon. -
The Cold War
The people fighting didn't want to use atomic bombs. The war lasted for 40 years.
