Story Time with Mom
Throughout the beginning of my life, my mother read to me every night before bed. We read many picture books, such as Dr. Suess, and Mother Goose Short Stories. We also read chapter books written by Road Dahl, and Charlottes Web. -
Reading Test in Kindergarten
When I was in Kindergarten, my teacher conducted a computerized test for my reading and math levels. At this time, my reading level was at second grade level. The teachers asked my parents if I could be moved into 1st grade early, but my mom declined. -
Learning to Read and Sounding Out Words
When I was in Kindergarten, I learned to sound out words. My mother was proud of me for reading the word "medicine" off a lotion bottle by sounding it out. -
Special Day for Reading Circle
In 2nd grade, we have a circle rug where we would all join for the teacher to read a story aloud. This day the teacher read "Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch. My teacher read this to us to announce that she was pregnant. This taught me that books can be used to communicate emotional and happy events in life. -
Third Grade Favorite Readings
In 3rd grade, I began reading the series "The Series of Unfortunate Events". These were may favorite and read the whole series as new books came out in later years. -
Fourth Grade Teacher and Our Love For Reading
In fourth grade, my teacher saw that my reading level was very high, and she would suggest several books to me that she was reading herself. One series was similar to the Twilight series, with 500 pages in each book. The books were about different fantasy creatures. -
Fifth Grade Teacher and Our Love for Reading
Similar to fourth grade, my teacher shared her favorite stories with me. We read many stories about traveling to far away places. -
Honors English I - Freshman Year
Freshman year, we read many classic books in Honors English. One that I can remember was Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde. I did not appreciate this book enough at the time or understand, but looking back, I understand its importance in literature. -
Honors English II - Sophomore Year
In my sophomore year of high school, I loved all of the classic books we read. Two of my favorites were The Scarlet Letter and The Glass Menagerie. The Scarlet Letter was great to me because it was such a mystery. The Glass Menagerie was different because it was a play. -
Joining a Book Club
For a long time, I lost touch with my passion for reading due to being busy with work and school. One of my classmates at NSC started a book club so I decided to join hoping to inspire myself to read more. It has definitely worked!
