My parents loved the library. We went to the library at least once every two weeks all the time I was growing up. My dad would borrow oversize books about art and my mother would borrow books about crafts. I would hang out in the children's section and borrow whatever I wanted!

In the 1960's they advertised breakfast cereal on billboards. The first word I ever read was "Cheerios" on a huge yellow billboard in downtown Los Angeles. I was pretty proud of myself.

In first grade I progressed in reading with a set of books called Programmed Readers. The first sentence I read on my own was "I am an ant." The picture gave me a big hint.

I have always enjoyed reading and rereading my favorite books. Dr. Seuss was well loved.

I struggled to learn to read. Phonics doesn't come naturally. I am a sight reader and read the whole word at once.

When you reread the same mystery book five or six times you get pretty good as guessing the solution.

A favorite! I probably borrowed this book from the library twenty times. The characters felt like old friends.

There were two 7 Eleven stores near my home in Covina, CA. I would walk to both to check out the comics on display. I would buy one or two with my allowance.

The Hobbit. Another great book.
