The Kissing Hand
When I was younger, my nana and my mom always read to me. In specific, I remember The Kissing Hand. I have divorced parents, so when I was younger, I would always have my dad and my mom kiss the center of my hand like Chester the raccoon's mom did in the story so I felt like they were always with me. -
Junie B. Jones
In kindergarten, my teacher started reading the Junie B. Jones books to my class. I became obsessed with them and those were the first books I ever read. I would read a whole one in only one day. It sparked my passion for reading. -
Stinkbug
In kindergarten, I was in a play about including everyone in school and standing up against bullies. All the characters were insects, and I was the stinkbug, who was being bullied by all the other insects at school. This was my first experience in theater. -
Teacher for a Day
In second grade, my teacher had to leave the class for about an hour. Someone was covering the class, but they didn't know what we were supposed to be doing because they were pulled in so late. Since I knew where she kept our agenda for the day, I looked at it and put everyone into centers. When she came back we were all doing our work. -
Wicked
In the summer before fourth grade, my nana took my brother and I to see the musical Wicked. I tried to understand the story line as much as a fourth grader could, and my nana explained it to me in terms I could better understand. -
Museum of the Decades
In third grade, I received my first ever research project assignment. For TAG, each grade level would be assigned a decade and everyone would have to do a project about a topic in the decade to present to people who came to spring parent-teacher conference. We worked all year on these projects and researched in school and on our own at home. I did celebrities of the 1950's. -
Video Games: Harmful or Harmless
In seventh grade, I wrote an argumentative research paper about whether video games were harmful or harmless. My teacher picked it to be published in the news paper, which was a very big deal to me because I put a lot of time and effort into it. -
Mock Trial
In eighth grade, we read the novel The Outsiders for an enrichment class and later did a mock trial for it. I was one half of the defense team for Johnny Cade. It ended up being a mistrial because the jury couldn't agree, but pulling evidence from the book and working on the case for weeks caused me to become more interested in justice as a career field. -
Beta Induction Ceremony
In eighth grade, I was Beta Club President and had to write a speech for the induction ceremony for incoming members. I gave my speech in front of the whole school. This was my biggest audience for public speaking ever. -
Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America
This summer, I attended the FCCLA National Leadership Conference where I competed in a STAR Event and attended several meetings and seminars. This was my first experience talking to people from different states on a more professional level.
