My birth
My name is Akio Li. I was born in Shanghai, China. I have a few brithers and sisters. We live in Shanghai but it is very crouded. We are not the richest family but we are also not the poorest. My life as a child wasnt very great. I had to help my aprents alot with work around the house while they were at work. My parents dont make much money but that is all we could get. I was greatfull for what I had. -
Immigrating to America
When I was 5 years old My parents decided that we would be better off in America. I was very excited when I found out we were immigrating. I had always wanted to go to america and see what it was like. My biggest dream was to be famous and live in San-francisco. We started to pack up and we got on a boat full of immigrants going to the same place we were. -
Arriving at Angel island
It took us two weeks but we are finally here, at angel island. The boat was crouded and we were close to runing out of food by the time we got there. There were people of all ethnicities there but there was the most Chinese. We were inspected and then we slept there for a couple of night untils we could find a home. Overall angel Island was not the most fun place and it was way overcrouded. -
Chinese Exclusion act
In 1882 the congress passed an act called the "Chinese Exclusion Act." This prohibited Chinese paople from immigrating for ten years afterwards. Because of this act, the rest of my family(Aunts , unkles, cousins, and grandparents) was not able to immigrate to America. This made my familky very unhappy. Ten years later they came, or what was left of them after some died of old age and diseases. Delaying their immigtation took a tole on them. -
Got my first job in a Sweatshop
I finaly got a job. It is in a sewatshop. The working conditions are not the best but it gives me some money to live off of. Everyday I work in a hot, dirty, crouded factory. Many people get sick and die from the dangerous machines that we work around. I never feel save. Some people tell me to get out of there while I can but I cant find another job. Is seems no one can find a decent job anymore. I dont even think there are anymore decent jobs.
