My Immigration Experience

  • Deciding To Immigrate

    Deciding To Immigrate
Living here in Ireland life is very hard. There isnt enough land, jobs, food. There is nothing for me here. Ive heard that in America there is more of everything we dont have here. I think this would be a good option for my husband and I.
  • Ellis Island

    Ellis Island
I decided we were going to go to America. We used all of our money to come here so we have to make sure we get started off right in America. We oonly had enough money to ride in steerage. There were rats everywhere. The living conditions were awful. Its a good thing it was just temporary.
  • The Ship

    The Ship
Finally my husband and I have arrived in America. It was a long journey and were trying to find out what to do. Everyone is running around all confused and scared. We dont even know what were doing. We dont have any belongings so were just walking around trying to find our way.
  • Jobless and Homeless

    Jobless and Homeless
We have been here for two weeks now and I still I dont have a plce to stay or a job. Ive been living in the streets with my husband. Its ery cold and we are very hungry. Many people simply wont hire us because were Irish. Things are very hard.
  • How to Go

    How to Go
My husband had very recently gotten a job when he got swine flu. He died a week later. He was the only one that was providing for the family. Seems like everyone had the sme idea as me about coming to get a job because there arent many left. I think ill move west and start over.
  • Black Codes

    Black Codes
One of my very close friends, an African American 21 year old girl, got fired from her job recently, racism is getting worse and worse. She cant find a job because no one will hire her just because of the color of her skin.
  • Moving West

    Moving West
Im not having much luck here in the west. Many people have come here and have money so they can buy land. I am in very poor condition and it looks like life isnt going so well for me here in America. I was possibly even better off in Ireland.
  • In the West

    In the West
I got a job as a maid for a wealthy American family. I work day and night non stop for very little pay. I become very tired very quickly. Things are getting very difficult for me. They are betterr than before but I still have very little money, certainly not enough to make a living.
  • Life In the West

    Life In the West
America has not been anything like I expected. Everyone is selfish and racist. I was fired from my job after working for a year because I wasmt working fast enough. I feel sweaty and weak. I fear I may be sick. I must try to find another job to live and provide for myself, without my husband, things have been very hard.
  • My Last Day

    My Last Day
I found out I have the Swine Flu. Ive accepted the fact that I am goign to die. I am living on the streets jobless and homeless. This has been a very interersting experience for me, Very difficult too.
