    Department of education is created
    In 1867 president Andrew Johnson signed into legislation creating the Department of Education. The departments purpose was to collect information and statistics about the nations schools. For the purpose of schools they create policies for them and decides who gets funding or assistance for the schools.

  • National Congress of Mothers

    National Congress of Mothers
    In 1897 Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst founded the National Congress of Mothers better known today as the PTA. This gives children a voice, a great resource to communities and families and advocate for public education. If not many programs would not exist today.

  • The Debut of the SAT test

    The Debut of the SAT test
    Carl Brigham creates a test first for the Army to know their IQ of the men. He then administers his own version of that test to some colleges. In 1926 the college board wants a test that can be used on wider group of schools. This test then becomes the SAT test and that is the first time high school students take the SAT. Now colleges want this test to know a students IQ if they admit that student to their college.

  • National School Lunch Act

    National School Lunch Act
    In 1946 the National School Lunch act was signed by President Truman. This program was established by Richard Russell so that schools could provide nutritionally balanced meals for students at a low cost or no cost. Most students today are able to eat at school for free or low cost everyday.

  • Higher Education Act

    Higher Education Act
    In 1965 President Johnson signed the Higher Education Act that allowed for the creation of grants loans and other programs to help those who went further in education to pay for it. This act was to strengthen those educational resources. Financial Aid and student loans was made possible with this act.
