Florence Kelly
Beacame an advocate for improving the lifes of women and children. She was appointed chief inspectior of factories for Illinois after she helped to win passage of the Illinois factory Act in 1893. She was important because she helped prevent a lot of injuries and saved a lot of lives. -
U.S.S. Maine explosion
Killed more then 260 men. No known cause for the ships explosion. It was one of the leading causes to the spanish american war. -
George Dewey
He Gave the command to open fire on the Spanish Fleet at manila, the Philippine capital. They took the city and destroyed every ship there. It was important because it allowed the U.S. troops to land in the phillippines. -
San Juan Hill
The capture of San Juan Hill put an end to the Spanish-American war. Led to the treaty of paris which was the U.S. and Spain having a cease-fire agreement -
Foraker Act
Ended military rule and set up a government in Puerto Rico. Gave U.S. power to appoint puerto ricos governor and members of the upper house its legislature. It helped stop military rule and actually set up a civil government. -
McKinley Assassination
President McKinley is assassinated and Theodore Roosevelt becomes president of the united states. The assassination of McKinley led to Roosevelt being president and under Roosevelts power he did a lot for america that benefited Public health and the environment. -
Panama Canal
The U.S. bough the French company's route for 40 million. The U.S. buying the canal led to colombia denying us to work on it so the U.S. then started a panamanian rebellion to get them to take over. The Canal was useful for a passage to the west of the World or the West of the U.S. it saved a lot of time and prevented going all the way around south America -
Meat Inspection act
Dicatated strict cleanliness requirements for meatpackers and created the program of federal meat inspection that was in use until it was replaced by more sophisticated techniques in the 1990's. Made Americas meats more safer and cleaner to eat. -
Pure food and drug act
Congress passed this law which stopped the sale of contaminated foods and medicines. Also made all food have proper labeling. It helped prevent sickness or misuse of drugs from the buyers -
Machine Guns
Firpower increased to 600 rounds per minute. It changed the whole style of warfare. Instead of standing on a line and shooting both sides were forced to into trench warfare. It changed the whole war and led to a lot more loss of lives. -
Zimmermann note
Telegram from ermean foreign minister to the german ambassador in Mexico that was intercepted by british agents. Telegram propesed an alliance between Mexico and Germany if they attacked the U.S. Its made a lot of amerians and it contributed to us joining the war. -
Selective Serivce act
It required men to register with the government in order to be randomly selected for military service. By 1918 24 million men had registered under the act. Of this almost 3 million were called. It helped prepare the U.S. for war if we had to get into the war instead of being unprepared. -
Convoy system
When a heavy guard of destroyers escorrted merchant ships back and forth aross the atlantic in groups. It cut shipping lossed in half, saved a lot of lives, and helped get supplies from A to B. -
Espionage and Sedition Acts
A person could be fined up to $10,000 and sentecned to 20 years in jail for interfering with the war effort or for saying anything disloyal, porfane, or abusive about the government. These acts led to a lot of amerians being charge and punished for things that shouldnt of even been illegal because the acts went against the first amendment. -
The 19th Amendment
Allowed woman the right to vote. Before this woman didnt have a lot of say in the world when congress passed this it was really the start of woman being equal to men.
