    The Supreme Court ruled that the school district had to provide education to Chinese students who spoke little- no English. This lead to the Equal Educational Opportunities Act being passed which required schools to overcome barriers to equal education (such as language barriers).

  • Sick Outs

    Sick Outs
    As a former DPS student, I decided it would be relevant to include this as my last and most recent event. On January 11th, 2016, Detroit teachers had a "sick out" strike in protest of the bad conditions of schools (overcrowding. Ex: I continually had 40+ students in any of my classes growing up) and the districts' debt. This caused over 90 schools to close during the strike.
