Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise of 1850 happened because a state wanted to join the Union. If happened it would mess up the balance. They fought on whether it should be free or not. The North wanted it to be free. The South wanted another slave state. In result, it was 11 slave states and 11 free states. The blance was even. -
Fugitive Slave Law
The Fugitive Slave Law was passed through the congress on September 18, 1850. Since the Northern and Southern states are separated the South needed a way to keep their slaves. The south was losing alot of slaves. So they devised the Fugitive Slave Law. This law basically says that if any slave escapes to the North, they should be returned. The North didnt like the law because they thought they would be participating in slavery. There was a big contreversy about this law. -
Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott was a slave who had lived in the free state of Illinois. Dred Scott and his wie thought they would be free. He went to the Supreme Court in hope of being free. They sued for freedom. Because Scott was black, he was not a citizen and therefore had no rights. This meant he couldn't sue. The court said he was and always will be a slave. -
Lincoln's Elected
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President. He was a firm believer of equality. He is known for freeing the slaves. Lincoln successfully led the country to victory. He gave famous debates and speeches throughout his election. Some people didn't like Lincoln as a president. His presidentry stopped at his assassination. -
Fort Sumter
The battle at Fort Sumter happened because the Southern states wanted to secede. This happened near Charleston, North Carolina. Fort Sumter began April 12, 1861. The Union and Confederacy both waited for each other to fire. The Union needed supplies and food. When they tried to get that the South fired. There were not any lives lost. -
Surrender at Appomatox
Gen. Lee surrendered to Gen. Grant at Appomatox Court House. Gen. Lee was somewhat forced to surrender. This happened on April 9, 1863. This was between the Union and Confederate armies. This battle was the last one of the Civil War. If this surrender didn't happen there would be more casualties. The Union had a great victory. -
Battle of Gettysburg
The battle of Gettysburg was between July 1-3 1863 in Pennsylvania. This battle had the largest amount of casualties in the Civil War. The South won the 1st day and the North won the last 2 days. The Union won with over 90,000 soldiers with George Meads as the leader. They also had about 20,000 casualties. The Confederacy lost with about 70,000 soldiers and Robert Lee as the leader. And had over 20,000 casualties. -
Gettysburg Address
On the afternoon of November 19, 1863 Abraham Lincoln gave a speech called the Gettysgurg Address. Lincoln gave this speech at Soldiers Nation Cemetery. Lincoln specificaclly talked about the Declaration of Independence. He spoke on the soldiers fighting in the war and equality. Although this speech was 2 minutes and only 10 sentences it is very important and rememorable. This speech was given 4 months later during the war. Today this speech is still relevant. -
Abraham Lincoln's Assassination
The 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, was assassinated on Good Friday. April 14. 1865 him and his wife arrived at Ford's Theater. Lincoln went to Ford's Theater to witness the Thirteenth Amendment. He was murdered by John Wilkes Booth. John was born in Maryland, he was a very known actor in the South. John snuck into the President's box and shot Lincoln in the back of his head. Losing the President really effected the nation. Lincoln was a strong leader in saving the Union. -
Slavery becomes outlawed.
Slavery is outlawed on December 6, 1865. The 13th Ammendment was passed and freen about 40,000. Even though slavery is gone, racism is still there. Slavery ending was very important. It gave blacks freedom and equality. Blacks felt like they finally got justice. They also got to fight as soldiers.
