King Kamehameha I
First monarch of Hawai'i and unified the Islands. He had complete authority and utilized haole counsel. Also known as Kamehameha the Great. -
Queen Ka'ahumanu
One of Kamehameha I 20 wives. Became regent when he died, and shared power with Kamehameha II, III. She changed Hawaiian history. Motivated Kamehameha II to overturn the kapu system. -
King Kamehameha II
Shared reign with Queen Ka'ahumanu. Wanted to see the world, so traveled to London. He took his wife Queen Kamamalu there and both died of measles. -
Queen Kamamalu
The king's half sister and favorite wife. At home and aboard, was a flamboyant figure. -
King Kamehameha III
Took reign for 30 years. Longest reign in Hawai'i and during his monarch, had three forms of goverment. The Great Mahele also marked his reign. -
Queen Kalama
Said to be loved by the Hawaiian people and consort of Kamehameha III. -
King Kamehameha IV
Very pro-British and established the Anglican Church in Hawai'i. He died 15 months after his child did. -
Queen Emma
Was married to King Kamehameha IV and helped him find The Queen's Hospital. Had only one child who died at four. Made a bid for the throne when the king died, but lost to Kalakaua. -
King Kamehameha V
Adopted less liberal constitution. He worried about the possibility of annexation. Proposed to the widowed Queen Emma, but she refused. -
Princess Ruth
Refused to convert to Christanity. Refusing to speak English, made people misjudge her considerable intelligence. Even though her life was filled with many deaths, she inherited huge amounts of land. -
King Kalakaua
Elected king in 1874. His powers were greatly limited because he was forced to accept a new consitution. -
Queen Kapi'olani
Wife to King Kalakaua and served as personal representative in London at Queen Victoria's Jubilee. Founded the Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children. -
Princess LIkelike
Mother of Princess Ka'iulani. Death was a mystery at age of 37. It is believed she made a death bed prediction that her daughter would leave Hawai'i for a long time, never marry, and never become queen. -
Queen Lili'uokalani
Last and most important queen of Hawai'i. Hawai'i was annexed to the US, forcing her to give up the throne and therefore, leaving her as the last monarch.
