Gandhi was born
Gandhi was born on October 2nd, 1869 in Porbandar, India, which was a part of Great Britain at that time. (Kytle 3.) His father was a chief minister in Porbandar and other states in India and his mother was a religious person that fasted frequently. His parents were not very wealthy when he was born so he grew up being poor. This is important because Gandhi was a very important figure in history. (Biography.com) -
Panic of 1893
The Panic of 1893 was an American economic crisis that was started when two of the country's biggest employers collapsed. Many companies had borrowed money to expand their businesses. However, after the two companies collapsed, the banks that they got the loans from asked for the money back so the companies went bankrupt. This left a lot of people homeless and unemployment increased. This is important because America learned from their mistakes so that this doesn't happen again. (history.com) -
Gandhi's first act of civil disobedience
In South Africa, Gandhi was traveling in a first-class train compartment and was asked to go the third-class compartment. Gandhi refused to move and was eventually kicked off the train. That night in the cold train station, Gandhi thought about how violence only provides a temporary good and leaves a permanent evil. After that, he vowed to never use violence. Gandhi forms the Natal Indian Congress
Gandhi formed the Natal Indian Congress to fight against the discrimination against Indians. Gandhi made petitions to the Natal legislature and the British government and got them signed by many of his supporters. The law Gandhi petitioned got passed but he got the attention of the public and the press in Natal. He then exposed the discrimination against the Indian subjects of Queen Victoria in one of her own colonies in Africa. This is important because he got publicity. (britannica.com) -

The modern Olympics were a series of sports events that were modeled after the ancient games staged in Olympia. The first games were held in Greece and attracted athletes from 14 different countries. A war between Spain and America about the independence of Cuba. This war took place in Cuba and the Philippines. The War impacted both of the countries economies in a negative way. This war is important because it ended Spanish colonial rule in the Americas. (britannica.com) -
Gandhi burns registration cards
In 1906 the British parliament passed the Black act in the Transvaal. The black act required people of Chinese or Indian ethnicity over the age of 8 to have a registration card on them to verify if they were allowed to be there. Gandhi sent a letter to parliament to repeal the act, but in 1908 he received a letter from parliament that his request was denied. Then, the Indian community burnt their cards to protest. A war between the Central Powers and the Allied powers, that mostly took place in Europe. In this war, there were many casualties from both sides and the war greatly affected the countries economies. Champaran Protest
The farmers of Champaran were being forced to grow indigo, and if they protested they would be tortured. The farmers sought the help of Gandhi to help them. Gandhi helped them start a non-violent protest and he was able to win concessions from the authority. This is significant because it was Gandhi's first active involvement in Indian freedom. Khilafat Movement
The Khilafat movement was a movement to try and save the Muslims Caliph (religious leader). Gandhi was a major spokesperson for this movement and also gave back the medals he earned in South America. Gandhi starts the Noncooperation movement
Gandhi started this movement to try and obtain self-rule in India from the British Government. This movement was started because of the massacring of several hundred Indians by troops led by the British. Indians became too violent and killed police officers during the protest, because of this Gandhi called off the movement. The Salt March
Gandhi and several thousand marchers walked 241 miles to the ocean as a protest. Once they got there Gandhi picked up a hand-full of salt in defiance of the government. This portrayed the nation-wide movement in which the peasants of India made salt illegally and Congress volunteers sold salt illegally in cities. Hitler comes to power
Hitler became the chancellor of Germany in 1933 by the president of Germany. He later received dictatorial powers and created Nazi Germany. World War II was the deadliest war in history and involved 30 countries with an estimated 50 million casualties. The war was started because Germany invaded Poland in Europe. The main reason for WW II was to shut down Hitler's aggressive foreign policy. This war was important because if they did not stop Hitler there would have been a lot more innocent deaths. The "Quit India" movement
The "Quit India" movement was a movement that called for the immediate removal of the British from India. Gandhi started this movement because of WW II that was just getting started. This ultimately separated India and Britain from one another. This is important because it led the way for India's independence from Britain. (biography.com) -
Gandhi dies
As Gandhi was heading to a prayer meeting with his two grandnieces in the late afternoon of January 30, 1948, a Hindu extremist named Nathuram Godse approached Gandhi. Nathuram Godse knelt before Gandhi, pulled out a pistol and shot Gandhi three times. Nathuram Godse was later hanged and other people working with him were put in jail. Most of the country of India mourned over his death for the following 13 days. This is significant because it is the end of an important figure. (history.com)
