    The Yalta Conference
    The conference included the "Big Three" which were Churchill, Stalin and Truman. They agreed to self-determination after the war ended.This also resulted in the divide of Germany into four military zones.Great Britain, the United states, the soviet Union and France would occupy a zone.
  • The Potsdam Conference

    The Potsdam Conference
    This conference included Stalin, Attlee, and Truman to discuss a compromise for after the end of the war. The one main agreement at the Potsdam conference was that the Nazi Party would be banned and that its leaders would be tried as war criminals. Several agreements made at the conference were broken and led to tensions between the the United States and Russia. Many view this as the start of the Cold War.
  • Winston Churhill's Iron Curtain Speech

    Winston Churhill's Iron Curtain Speech
    Winston Churchill's "Iron Curtain" Speech occurred in March of 1946. Europe had divided into two political regions including a democratic western Europe and a communist eastern Europe. Churchill addressed the fact that Easter Europe was mostly controlled by the Soviet Union. Winston said "An iron curtain has descended across Europe," the curtain was a symbol for communism.
  • The Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine
    The Truman Doctrine was established in 1947 as a foreign policy by President Truman. It said that the US would provide military aid to countries that were attempting to resist communism. We promised to join or support any fight against communism. It approved of $400 million in aid and military support to Turkey and Greece. The doctrine caused tensions to increase.
  • The Berlin Airlift

    The Berlin Airlift
    The United States and Britain started the Berlin airlift to fly supplies into West Berlin. This occurred because the Soviet Union blockade of Berlin. They wanted Berlin all to themselves so they closed and blocked any means of getting in and out. The airlift lasted for more than 10 months and carried more than 2.3 million tons of cargo into West Berlin. Planes took off and landed every few mins around the clock during this time. The soviets eventually lifted the blockade in 1944.
  • The Warsaw Pact

    The Warsaw Pact
    The Warsaw Pact was the communist response to NATO. It was a military alliance between all of the communist east European countries. Each country promised to come to the aid of the others if anyone of them be the victim of foreign aggression. The countries included, East Germany, Soviet Union, Hungary, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. The Warsaw Pact contributed to the arms race competition and the domination of the USSR over Eastern Europe.
