Chinese Nationalists Move Capital to Taiwan
Chinese Nationalists moved to Taiwan to escape Mao's communism. This divided China into "2 countries." It stayed like that for 30 years after Chiang Kai-shek left.

The United Nations voted to admit China into the U.N., but leave Taiwan out in 1971. Today Taiwan is still rejected. They have tried to apply by changing their name, but they get denied each time.

Nixon visiting China connectd the United States and China. It was the first time a US president ever went to China. It brought the countries together because previously they had been enemies.

One Child Policy Instituted
The policy was created after Mao encouraged Chinese citizens to have more children, but there was not enough food to support his plans. The policy was that Chinese families could not have more than one child, and if they did, they would be fined higher than what they could afford.

Gang of Four Arrested
The Gang of Four were Chinese Communist Officials. The members were, Mao Zedong's ex wife Jiang Qing, Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan, and Wang Hongwen. When they got put on trial in 1981, that ended the Cultural Revolution.

Students began to protest against the government in Tiananmen square, and as June approached, the number of people in the square grew bigger and bigger. Mao Zedong eventually declared martial law and the protests turned into a brutal massacre.

Building of the Three Gorges Dam

Hong Kong Returned to China
The UK handed Hong Kong over to China in 1997. Chris Patten was the governor at the time of the "handover." Over 1 million people immigrated after Hong Kong was not in British control anymore.

Macau Returned to China
China recieved Macau from the Portuguese Republic in 1999. It was settled by Portugal in 1535 during the Ming Dynasty.Portuguese is still the official language there, and they still drive on the left side of the road, unlike mainland China.

Hainan Island Incident
The Hainan Island Incident was when a United States intelligence aircraft and a Chinese figher jet crashed in mid-air. This caused an altercation between the countries. The Chinese pilot went missing, so he was assumed dead. The 24 people on the U.S. plane were captured, but later released.
