    In September of 2001, a non-Tabilan rebel controller was assassinated by a group of suicide bombers. Massoud was a member of the group known as, Northern Alliance.

    Kandahar was the final foremost city that the Taliban had the opportunity to control. However, the Taliban regime collapsed and they handed over their weapons to Mullah Naqibullah, a district leader.

    In the summer of 2002, Hamid Karzai was elected as the interim president for Afghanistan. He was given a two year ruling time that was used as a transitional period. During this time, Afghanistan began to anticipate the soon-to-come elections and adopted a constitution.

However, the Pentagon saw this move as an addition to the already-present principles that dealt with war against terror in the United States.

    NATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, took control of peacekeeping groups, such as the International Security Assistance Force. This was a memorable moment for NATO because it was its first operation outside of North America or Europe. NATO was put in control because new nations were hard to obtain.

    After meeting several times and having many discussions about what the new constitution should and should not include, Afghanistan adopted this new way of conducting the country's affairs. This was a milestone for Afghanistan and it marked the end of the "transitional period," after President Hamid Karzai signed the constitution of January 24,2004.

    United States controlled Afghan forces and Pakistanians were organizing and preparing dozens of troops for the search of the Taliban and al-Qaeda members that were scattered throughout Pakistan. The United States and al-Qaeda did not "see eye to eye."
