Created a plan for a Polytechnic school in Boston, Massachusetts.
The plan was drafted by William Barton Rogers and was for a scientific and polytechnic school. -
Charter approved and awarded a property
The Massachusetts legislature approves MIT’s charter and also awards a Back Bay property lot to MIT and Boston Society of Natural History. -
MIT's first Corporation Meeting
The "government" at MIT had held their very first meeting. -
First enrolled student.
The first student was enrolled and his name was Eli Forbes. -
First classes started
The first classes for MIT had started and they were held in the "Mercantile Building" -
Alumni association founded
The Alumni association was founded for the graduate class of 1968 and was started by Robert Richards. -
Technology Campus Designed
There was a plan drafted for a technology campus. They had also purchased 50 acres of land for this campus. It had cost $500,000 and was donated from a student named Thomas Coleman duPont. -
Programs added the U.S. military officers
There was a program called the Navy V-12 program and the Army Specialized Training Program that had helped military officers learn technical skills. -
Research Laboratory of Electronics
They had created a research laboratory for electronics. This was a created to be a "peacetime sequel to the Radiation Lab" -
Music Curriculum
Music was an added subject to the MIT curriculum and was started by Klaus Liepmann. -
TX-0 COmputer
-
Project MAC
In 1963 they had started the MAC project, which had a focus on timesharing computers. Later, in 1975, the name was changed to the Laboratory for Computer Science. -
Sketchpad
The program for the computer called Sketchpad was created. This allows you to create graphic images on the computer screen instead of having to type code to create the graphics. -
MACSYMA
The computer program, MACSYMA, was created by Joel Moses. This program was manipulating "algebraic quantities and performs symbolic integration and differentiation." -
Atrificial Intelligence
In 1970, Artificial Intelligence became its own program. It had previously been a part of the MAC program. -
Compact Linear Predictive Coding Vocoder
They created a compact linear predictive coding vocoder. This helped digital signal processing chips to help with predictive coding. They were inexpensive and would analyze the speech using certain parameters to suggest coding. -
Project Athena
The school had launched this project to experiment educationally so they are able to improve their teaching and learning. -
Media Lab Founded
Nicholas Negroponte, who was a professor at MIT, had founded the media lab. This lab was for designing and inventing technology to help transform everyday life. -
M.Eng. program
A program for electrical engineering and computer science was approved for a 5-year program that would get you both a masters degree and bachelors degree. -
Microelectronics Laboratory
MIT had created the Lincoln Laboratory Microelectronics Laboratory that was for semiconductor research and a fabrication facility. This supported many different programs including Photon-counting avalanche photodiode arrays and flight-quality gigapixel charge-coupled device imager focal planes. -
Opens Nanomechanical Technology Laboratory
The Nanomechanical technology laboratory was opened and it is to be used for the study of mechanical properties in surfaces and devices that contain the same molecular and atomic scales. -
