Plessy V. Ferguson
A case in the state of Louisiana that created a law that allowed segregation in railway cars between blacks and whites. A man of the name Homer Adolph Plessy was arrested for sitting in the white section if the train. Plessy V. Ferguson is important because it allowed segregation to happen (separate but equal). -
Brown V. Board of Education
The case consisted on four other cases that where arising in different states over segregation in public schools bur failed. The supreme court of Delaware later ruled that African American students had to be admitted into any public school. Brown V. Board of education was important because it allowed desegregation in public schools. -
Murder of Emmett Till
Emmett Till was murder by the husband and the brother-in-law of Carolyn Bryant, because supposedly Emmett whistled at her. Emmett Till's murder brought forward fear to young African Americans. therefor they where encouraged to join the Civil Rights Movement. -
Rosa Parks and The Montgomery Bus Boycott
This African American women know as Rosa Parks, refused to give up her seat to a white men while on bus to her house. In result she got arrested for her refusal to give her seat up these caused a lot tension in Montgomery. Leading to the formation of people boycotting the buses until hey became desegregated. -
Founding of Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Martin Luther King
Martin Luther King was the leader of the civil rights movement, best known for advancement in the fight to gain his civil rights. SCLC was created by six black ministers to continue the fight for their rights after the bus boycotts. MLK became to be the president of this organization. -
Little Rock Nine and Central High school
Nine African American students to be the first to be enrolled at an all white public school. The governor of Arkansas sent the national guard to prevent the students from entering the school. Little Rock Nine and Central High school are important because it reinforced the law of desegregation public schools. -
Greensboro Sit in
Four African American students from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University participated in a sit-in, where they sat in the white section of a bar in a dinner in Greensboro, where they demanded to be served. This sit-in started the idea of nonviolent protest against segregation. -
Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and Freedom Summer
The SNCC was founded by a group of young African American students right after the Greensboro sit-ins, they kept independent from SCLC by creating their own strategies and projects. Free summer was generated to recruit as much voting registrations inn Mississippi. -
Freedom Ride/ Freedom Riders
Freedom Ride/ Riders, was created by a group of African Americans and some Whites that where on there way to Virginia and came upon many harassment and beatings throughout the trip.These created a whole new movement called Freedom Riders, they where important because they caught the attention of the president and this resulted on the desegregation of buses. -
March on Washington
The march of over 200,000 people in Washington, generated the passion that people had over earning their rights. Also known greatly because of king's "I Have a Dream" speech. The March on Washington led the president to initiate a strong federal civil rights congress. -
Civil Rights Act
The Civil Rights Act, ended segregation in all places and the Prohibition to discriminate an employee base on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. The Civil Rights Act was extremely important because it ended segregation throughout the United States. -
Assassination of Malcolm x
Thomas Hagen killed Malcolm x with multiple gunshots to the chest at a rally he was attending. It is said that the Nation of Islam was behind his assassination. This was a very important issue because Malcolm was one of the most influential activist in the Civil Rights Movement. -
Voting Rights Act
The Voting Rights Act, was passed to strengthen the 15th amendment that gives the right for African Americans to vote. By taking away any type of limitation that would interfere with their right to vote. It is important because it allowed for minorities to have the right to vote without limitations. -
Assassination of MLK
MLK was killed on his balcony during his stay in a Lorraine motel in Memphis, Tennessee. His assassination resulted in outbreaks of violence. Martin's assassination is very important because he was a prime leader of the Civil rights movement.
