    Microscope History

  • Robert Hooke

    (1635-1703)
Around the same time time Leeuwenhoek did his research, Hooke made his own microscope and examined a cork of wood. He saw tiny boxes, and called them "Cellulae". This man was the first man to discover cells.
  • Francesco Redi

    (late 17th century)
Before the 18th century, people believed that maggots and flies just suddenly appeared like magic. Redi preformed an expiriment to prove that living creatures come from living creatures.
  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek

    (1632-1723)
In 1674 he wrote about his discoveries with his homemade microscope. Leeuwenhoek was the first man to make a microscope as he was skilled with making magnifying lenses.
  • Matthias Schleiden and Theodore Schwann

    (1839)
Over the next century, people made many examinations with microscopes. Schlieden and Schwann came together and inferred that all living things are made out of cells.
  • Rudolf Virchow

    (1858)
Virchow confirmed that cells reproduce themselves and hypothesized that all cells can only come from pre-existing cells.
  • Louis Pasteur

    (1864)
People believed that cells were formed in water, like crystals in solution. Virchow debunked this theory after preforming an expiriment and confirmed that micro-organisms came from other micro-organisms in the air and water, and did not appear like magic.
  • James HIllier and Albert Prebus

    (1938)
Together the two of them invented the first electron microscope.
