Meriwether Lewis was born in Virginia. -
Moved to Georgia
After his father died in 1779, Meriwether moved to Georgia with his mother and his step-father. He lived in what is today Oglethorpe County. He developed a love for the outdoors and became an expert hunter. -
Joined U.S. Army
Lewis joined the army as an ensign in 1795 and progressed to the rank of captain by 1780. William Clark was one of his commanding officers and later joined him in the Corps of Discovery. -
Appointed aide to President Thomas Jefferson
As a personal secretary to Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis lived in the presidential mansion and was able to meet many promient people. -
Chosen to explore Louisiana Purchase
After Thomas Jefferson purchased the land west of the Mississippi River from France, he asked Meriwether Lewis to lead an expedition to explore this new land. Lewis asked William Clark to join him as a leader of the Corps of Discovery. -
Viewed the Pacific Ocean
After over a year of difficult travel, the Corps of DIscovery finally saw the Pacific Ocean. -

Death
The details of the death of Meriwether Lewis remain a mystery. He died from gunshot wounds to the head inflicted early in the morning while in his room at an inn. Some historians believe he was murdered; other believe he committed suicide.
