Foundation
Tarapoto , also called the city of the palms was founded in August 20,1782 by the Spanish bishop Baltasar Jaime Martínez de Compañón y Bujanda. -
Origin of his name_first version
There are two versions about the origin of its name:
The first: on the banks of the “cocha” of Suchiche they existed palms, whose scientific name is ICARTEA VENTRICOSA MARTINS, but the locals knew like TARAPOTUS. -
Origin of his name_second version
The second: it refers that the name is the result of the union of two terms “tara” and “poto”, that the Lamas´settlers and the settlers of the “Cocha” of Suchiche used to perform commercial exchange; called “tara” to the content of some of their products such as fish, beans, etc. In a “poto” that it was a container manufactured by opening one of the ends of the fruit of the tree called Huingo. -

Its weather is varied, the maximum degrees can reach 34 degrees of temperature and the minimum can reach 12 degrees. -
Gastronomy
The typical dishes are the Tacacho with Cecina, the Patarashaca, The Juane de gallina, the Ninajuane, the Inchicapi, the Timbuche, etc.
The typical beverages are the Uvachado, the Chuchuhuasi, the masato, the Chapo, the chicha de maíz, etc. -
